Welcome to the chicken rescue portion of featherlane farm. We have recently undertaken the task of caring for sick and injured birds. Below are two photos of a red star chicken we rescued.
When the farmer found her she thought the hen was blind. Her eyes and head were caked with blood making it impossible to see her wounds. The farmer decided to clean her up and put her in a cage confined from other birds. As the farm thought the bird was blind they named her Helen after Helen Keller, the legendary blind girl. Eventually the farm decided that Helen was too much work, as she required her food dish to be tapped every hour. They put a phone call in to us, wondering whether we might take her. We said yes and took her in that day and about a week later we were able to clean Helen's head enough to reveal that she had one working eye, but the other eye had been pecked out.
We are currently in the process of introducing her to the rest of our flock.

Another rescue was two golden comet pullets, the only survivors of a weasel attack at a local farm. One of the pullets was perfectly fine, but the other had a broken toe and mangled foot. The weasel had tried to pull her foot through a cage, and she could barely walk. We took both birds, and, applying iodine daily to the one bird's foot, we were able to heal her, until she could walk without a limp.
